It is easy to sink into despair when receiving a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Once you get over the shock, anger and frustration you can start to gather the information you need to understand the disease. To live in optimum wellness and health when you have a chronic and progressive disease such as Parkinson’s requires that you understand that you must adapt, be encouraged, stay positive and pace yourself by prioritizing goals and making time to attend regular physical, occupational and speech therapies. These therapies are essential for continued physical and emotional wellness. They will also stimulate intellectual and emotional well-being too. When you can maintain function, it makes all the difference in how you feel about your life.
Your medical team is an important ingredient to your wellness and health. Your medical team members must truly believe in bringing about wellness for you and have compassion for your ability to function and live life to the fullest. Chose your medical team carefully. Find out how knowledgeable they are about Parkinson’s and how much experience they have treating those who have the disease. Are their philosophies about life the same as yours? Do they really care about your health status? Are they current regarding the latest studies and trials for treatment of Parkinson’s disease?
As with any chronic disease it is important to maintain a health file at home that includes all the major diagnoses, test reports, immunization records, dates of serious illnesses, surgeries, any allergies you have to medications, and a up to date list of all your current medications, including any over-the-counter medications, herbs and supplements you are taking. This record is important should you be traveling and in need of medical care while away from your home medical team.
A positive attitude is vital to your wellness and health because when you have good self-esteem and a positive attitude you can cope better with your disease, have greater energy for activities and to enjoy those around you.
Support groups are another important ingredient to having a wellness and healthy atmosphere. Support groups can be found all over the world and in your community. You can find a wealth of information in these support groups including tips for handling situations that may arise as your disease progresses. Support groups offer other things besides education; they offer socialization, and a way to connect with others who are experiencing the same things you are.
Parkinson’s is not just a physical disease there is a component of a mental, cognitive and emotion being too. This is why counseling should be an important tool for your wellness and good health. Psychologists and social workers can help you to adjust to the diagnosis, and be there when times become stressful. Depression and anxiety are common to encounter with any chronic or progressive disease and counseling can help you to stay mentally and emotionally well. Your medical doctor can give a referral to a competent mental health counselor if you need one or your support group may be able to make recommendations.
