Living With Parkinson’s

It is always difficult to receive a diagnosis that involves a chronic and progressive disease but those who have gone before have shown that life goes on after the diagnosis and you can have a long and successfully productive life after the diagnosis. Typically the symptoms start out mild and are slow to progress. It can take years before the symptoms are to the point where the individual is unable to function. There is always research being done that helps to improve treatment for the disease.
Attitude is generally the key to living successfully with any chronic disease and that fact is no different when it comes to living with Parkinson’s disease.
One way to go through life with a chronic disease is to analyze life based on your symptoms. What problems lie ahead for you based on your symptoms and how can you solve those problems so that your life can be more productive as well as safe? Take for instance the problem of balance. Individuals with Parkinson’s have difficulty maintaining balance that can lead to falls. Solutions might be to install railings on both sides of stairs, railings or handgrips by the toilet and tub/shower. Lighted stairs and walkways. Individuals with Parkinson’s learn to look down while they walk instead of only looking ahead. They also learn to walk slowly and to watch where they place their feet for each step to avoid tripping or losing balance over a miss-step or uneven ground.
Why do people hurry through life? When we are in a hurry that is when accidents happen. People with Parkinson’s learn how to slow down to avoid accidents. Staying calm and relaxed and learning how to take your time allows you to accomplish tasks without falling or injuring yourself. This is a good rule to follow for anyone not just those with Parkinson’s disease.
When you are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease or any other chronic disease one thing that can make a real difference is being surrounded by supportive, knowledgeable people willing to uplift you, encourage you, and assist you in any manner that is needed. Parkinson’s is a disease that requires support because no man is an island and no one can face a chronic, progressive disease without being surrounded by loved ones, friends and those who are caring professionals.
Living with Parkinson’s disease is also made easier when your doctor becomes your partner and when you are open and honest with your doctor about your symptoms and any changes in your condition. Your treatment plan will be ever changing to match the way your symptoms progress. New treatments are always being introduced and your doctor will discuss drug trials with you and also alternative medicines as they become available.
