Parkinson’s Disease: Does this concern You?
June 20, 2009 by admin
Perhaps you do not know someone directly affected by this condition. You may even be as healthy as a newborn kitten. Does this mean that you should not care?
The level of care that you demonstrate for sufferers and their families is entirely up to you. It may not seem significant to you now but in the event that it could in the future you are advised to at least learn a little bit about this condition.
At the very least, it could deter you from wanting to make fun of someone if you are forced to visit a nursing home against your will. (This is somewhat directed towards minors who may be taken by their parents to see their grandma, grandpa, or other incapacitated relative.)
Even if this condition does not concern you at this time it could in the future. Therefore, perhaps if you are somewhat of a shop-a-holic you may want to justify that addiction by supporting a good cause.
For instance, perhaps you are a compulsive eBay bidder. Maybe you can find a seller who supports research of Parkinson’s disease and their families. Perhaps you are a addicted to spending time on MySpace or Facebook.
If so, you can also help the community in one additional way. Perhaps you can learn more about this condition and then if someone makes mention of a family member you can just be a listening ear.
If they ask you why you are such a good listener they may be very impressed that you do not even know anyone personally affected. They are just glad that you care! So, if you are wondering what concern is it to you, the answer is that perhaps it does.
If you can reach out just by being a good listener-or even by being a good shopper-it can change the world. (Okay, so perhaps this is bordering enabling a money addict to keep spending. However, everyone has an addiction they want to justify.)
In case you need to know a little bit about Parkinson’s Disease please read the following:
This disease affects about 6.3 million people around the world. About 1.5 million victims of this disease are from one country alone (U.S.A.). About 50% more of all these cases are usually found in men, not women.
Furthermore, PD accounted for about 15,600 deaths at about the turn of the 21st century. This equals a percentage of population of 5.5% per 100,000 people. Up to the quarter of these people could be at some point someone you know, as about a fourth of the people in the year 2000 new someone diagnosed of PD.
In fact, this was almost 10 years ago so the numbers could very well be higher now. They may not be, and do not have to be though if people like you decide you really should care.
If someone has empathy for a cause that does not hit close to home to them it often could demonstrate that a level of compassion in that person is greater than many others. However, many people who support worthy causes such as PD are not in it for any personal glory at all. You could be one of these people if you want to be.
