Toothpaste is a pretty important tool in the arsenal against tooth decay. There is a vast array of different toothpastes on the market today. The different types of toothpastes cater to every whim and fancy of many individuals searching for just the right toothpaste for them. Toothpaste caters to taste, convenience, price-range, cosmetic needs and the need to clean and freshen the teeth and mouth. Today toothpastes come in gel form, paste form, as a whitener, and plaque fighter, it even contains fluoride and stain remover. There are even training gels for babies and toddlers just learning how to brush.
With so many choices how do people decide which type of toothpaste is right for them?
One-way to decide which toothpaste is right for them is to ask at your next dental visit. Your dentist can tell you based on your dental history which type of toothpaste would be best suited for your dental healthy.
Most toothpaste today contains fluoride. In fact, most dentists recommend fluoridated toothpastes to their patients. Fluoride strengthens teeth against the bacteria that cause cavities in adults and children, which is why dentists recommend toothpastes that contain it.
Another type of toothpaste is gel toothpaste, which is especially popular with children. It is not as risky for children to swallow flavored gel as it is for them to swallow other adult toothpaste. Because it is geared for kids, gel toothpaste usually comes in many kid-friendly flavors. The packaging is designed to attract kids with bright colors and characters that are popular with kids. Gel toothpaste is recommended for those kids who hate to brush and is used to make brushing more attractive and appealing for them.
Desensitizing toothpaste is used to strengthen teeth and also to decrease the sensitivity pain that can occur when individuals have sensitivity to cold or hot fluids, cold air or to brushing. The individual uses the desensitizing toothpaste for a period of 4 to 6 weeks in order to strengthen the teeth. In this time period the feelings of pain when the teeth are exposed to cold, hot or the toothbrush are usually decreased enough to allow easier brushing again.
There are also plaque and tartar control toothpastes that are designed to promote good oral health by giving people tools that help to cut down on the two factors that contribute to poor dental health the most plaque and tartar. Plaque is a thin, clear film on the teeth that can attract bacteria. The bacteria than forms tartar as the plaque harden. The tartar is usually brown or yellow as it stains. Only your dentist can remove tartar from your teeth.
If you have dentures there is toothpaste that is designed for you too. Dentures cannot get cavities but they can stain and plaque and tartar can affect them. Denture toothpaste not only cleans the dentures but cleans the gums too.
Whitening toothpaste is another type of toothpaste that is good for those who eat foods or liquids that are prone to staining such as coffee, berries, tea, and the stains that come from those who smoke or chew tobacco products.
