If you spend anytime watching TV or reading magazines you are bombarded by mints, mouthwashes and other oral products that are designed to fight bad breath. At best most of these products work temporarily or only mask the symptoms of bad breath. Most commercial bad breath products do not cure what causes the bad breath.
What can you do if you have bad breath?
First, it is a good idea to try to narrow down what could be causing your bad breath so you know what treatments will be effective at controlling or preventing your bad breath.
Certain foods
Certain health conditions
Bad habits
The list above shows things that can cause bad breath. The causes of bad breath are numerous and you may have more than one cause for your particular bad breath. What causes your bad breath one time may not be the cause for it the next time you get bad breath.
Food is often the culprit when someone tells you that your breath stinks. When food is broken down in your mouth it can cause a foul odor around your teeth. Onions and garlic are notorious for causing bad breath. Other vegetables and spices can also cause a foul odor in your mouth.
Drinking alcohol is almost a guarantee to give you bad breath the next morning.
Poor dental hygiene is another cause for bad breath. Individuals that refuse to brush their teeth as often as they should or who are lazy in the technique they use to brush their teeth can end up with bad breath. Individuals who refuse to floss can also get bad odors coming from food particles left in-between their teeth.
Dental problems like gingivitis or periodontal disease can cause bad breath so can dry mouth and chronic infections like lung infections, lung abscesses, sinus infections, chronic acid reflux can also cause bad breath. Other diseases such as kidney failure, and liver disease can cause bad breath. Diabetics can have a "fruity breath" as a symptom of diabetes especially if the diabetes is uncontrolled. If a person has hiatal hernia they can have bad breath.
Getting medical care for these diseases can cure the bad breath. Improving your dental hygiene can also improve your breath.
If you smoke or chew tobacco products you can have bad breath so quitting these habits can reduce the risk for bad breath.
Individuals who go on crash diets to lose weight can also experience an unpleasant "fruity breath" from ketoacidosis, which is a breakdown of chemicals during a diet fast. Those who participate in these diets are not being healthy and are risky more than just bad breath. Eating a healthy diet can improve your medical health and improve your breath at the same time.
