"Miracle Diets!"

“Lose 4 Kilos in five days”. – “Get a killer body”. Miracle Diets do not work. If you lose weight too quickly, you will gain it fast again after finishing the miracle diet.
These are some of the many advertisement we are bombarded with every day, specially when the summer is coming and we all “have to” show our sexy body! And most of these adverts are directed to women.
The diet of the artichoke, the diet of the sandwich, the Malibu diet are only some examples of diets that in their majority can have negative consequences on the health. With these diets, the organism lear that you are in taken less calories and nutrients, so starts saving by using less. When the diet stops, the organism continues in the saving mode so you will gain weight pretty quickly.
This type of diets – some based in proteins, others in carbon hydrates; just try to attract the user, who eats something nice and rich with the idea that is not going to get fat. These are diets that have no future. In the case of the advertisements of "thinning centers" where the only thing that become thin in the end is the pocket of the patient.
We have divided the Miracle Diets into six different groups:
1. – The diets based on a single food (diet of espagueti, the potato or sparragus): “they can produce digestive and psychic upheavals, because they break the normal nourishing rate”.
2. – The diets of very low or low caloric value (diet of 150 grams or proteins): those were you consume between 400 and 1,000 kilocalories a day. Body aches, dizziness, hair loss , amenorrhoea, insomnia or depression are some of the indirect effect of this type of diets.
3. – Hypoenergetic Diets: (like the diet of the grape, the ice cream or the integral rice): although they provide more calories than the previous ones, if the consumption of calories is less than 1,200 kcal a day, they are not balanced.
4.- Diets poor in Carbon hydrate, and/or rich in fats: like the diet of the orange or protein’s diet. Bony decalcification and kidneys damages, loss of liquids, high cholesterol and urico acid, halitosis, sensation of nausea or constipation, are some of the consequences of this class of diets.
5. – Diet rich in Carbon hydrate : like the pineapple diet or the integral rice diet. They cause essential fat acid deficiency, lipo solubles vitamins and proteins deficiencies as well.
6. – “Colourful” Diets: like the diet of the good humour, the sandwich diet: they include exotic menus, advertised by celebrities and they do not contribute a correct nutrition.
Is ironic that in a world where everybody says that what matter is the beauty inside of you, and if you are obese or just fat, most people don’t pay attention to you.
This is my case; 5 year ago I was thin, very thin. Naturally thin, not anorexic or bulimic, I had a very busy life, with very little time to eat or think about food, also I smoked about a packet of cigarettes a day (horrible I know).
The thing is that back then I felt more respected and listen to by other people.
Due to some changes in my life, I started suffering from anxiety, I also gave up to smoke and had a child, and the result was almost 30 kilos heavier than I was before. I felt awkward; people in the street would look at me funny. If I had to complain about something, they didn’t take into account my opinion, as seriously as they did when I was thin. So, are we all hypocrites or what?
All that talk about how important is the inner beauty and the good principles and manners, and we have to see every day how pretty thinner people get away with a lot more than we do. So, is society responsible for the anorexia and bulimia in teenagers?
We should all think about the truly importance of life and health. Yes, I am going to repeat what most doctors’ say. Be thin is not important, be healthy is.
If you are really overweight you could cause serious damage to your heart, suffer from diabetes, etc.
If you go too far in your diet, doing silly things like eating only apples and lettuces, you can die of starvation, cardiac arrest, kidney failure, etc.
So, let’s get balanced. Let’s be healthy, don’t go to the extremes which both can cause you death.
The best recipe is a balance diet and gentle exercise every day. Change your life, be healthy, and eat healthy. Don’t forget what they say about mens sana in corpore sano, which means healthy mind in a healthy body.
Most of the extreme weight problems are due to psychological items, like anxiety, depression, very low self-esteem.
If we address this problems, we will feel better with ourselves and will be able to control our over eating or the not eating at all.
So, go and see a professional and address your psychological problems as well as your eating disorders. You will be in control of your body and your mind soon.
