It’s easy to get excited about working out. It’s another thing to stay excited and stick with the routine. Many people don’t follow through with their exercise routines throughout the year. However, if you want to lose weight and improve your health, you need a good routine that you will stick with. Here is a look at how you can start up a routine and then stick with it to see the results that you want.

See Your Doctor

The very first thing that you should do is see your doctor. Before you start exercising, you should make sure that you are healthy enough to exercise. Some conditions may mean you need to start out very slowly. You want to ensure that any possible health problems are found so you can safely exercise.

Test Your Own Physical Fitness

It’s a good idea to test your physical fitness before you start your new routine. This way you can measure your progress as you go along. Consider finding out your BMI and take measurements of your body. Usually you’ll want to measure the chest, hips, arms, thighs, and waist. You can also check you resting heart rate, flexibility, and of course your weight. Every moth or so you’ll want to retest yourself to see how you are doing.

Start Slow

If you haven’t exercised in a long time or you are overweight, it is important that you start out slow with the exercise routine. You may even want to start out with only 15 minutes of exercise until you build up to a longer amount of time. Warming up is going to be essential as well so you don’t end up hurting yourself. As you continue, you should soon be able to exercise for 30 minutes at a time. Don’t try doing too much in the beginning as well or you will burn out.

Choose Something You Like and Mix it Up

There are two main reasons people give up on exercising. One reason is because they hate the exercise they are doing. The other reason is that they get bored with their exercises. To avoid this problems you need to choose exercises you like and mix up your routine as well. What do you enjoy doing? Try to incorporate this into your exercise routine. You don’t want to have the same workout every day either. Try to mix things up. One day you may want to exercise on the rebounder, another day you may want to jog, and maybe add some swimming in sometimes for variation.

Have Goals

If you never set a goal, it will be more difficult to keep up your exercise routine. Set goals to aim for and make sure that they are realistic as well. Don’t make goals long term either. Set goals that you can achieve rather quickly. This way you keep yourself motivated to the long term goal and you don’t end up giving up because it seems impossible.

Old age is a time when many of us start feeling unwanted and unloved. Although many people accept that they can no longer carry out the same activities as they did when they were younger, they are unable to take up new responsibilities in line with their changing physical capacities. But these are no reasons to become a victim of low self esteem. It’s important to pay attention to all aspects of a fulfilling life including your grooming and appearance. As a well groomed person, you feel more confident and positive in life.

With advancement in age, our physical appearance also undergoes changes, most of them unwelcome such as sagging skin, wrinkles and grey hair. While such physical changes are irreversible, the right diet, regular exercise and a stress-free life can help you age gracefully. For instance, a balanced diet and proper skin care can help you control wrinkles on skin, while a proper exercise regime can take care of posture stoops and paunches. Most of it is really a matter of will and taking initiative. Time is not a big constraint in old age and simple personal grooming routines can make a significant difference in your appearance.

Appearance often hinges on the way you present yourself. Recall the time you first went in for a job interview. Then, you had the beauty of youth yet you did take pains to appear well groomed, wear well tailored, clean and pressed clothes. The same care and attention to your clothes and body can pay rich dividends in old age.

Choose you clothes carefully – anything too tight or too loose almost never works. Age is an important consideration while choosing clothes. Dressing like a teenager will not flatter your image. Smart casuals are generally the way to go. A nice balance of colors or lighter shades lend a pleasant touch to your personality. Another important consideration while choosing appropriate clothing should be the occasion – dress up as is the norm at the particular occasion.

Pay attention to your grooming so that you always appear neat and presentable. Dress in clothes that are appropriate for your age. Comfortable, tasteful clothing makes you look attractive and classy. Take time to wash your hair, keep your finger nails clean and trim. You will see that not many people pay attention to the color of your hair, the wrinkles on your skin or crow’s feet on your face when you present a well groomed appearance.

Staying cheerful is another good way to make sure people are attracted to you. No matter what the age, we tend to like the company of a person who has a ready smile rather than one who is always grumpy! An understanding that there is more to us that our physical appearance also goes a long way in developing a positive self image.

There are some people, who cannot handle the inevitable alterations in their physical appearance as they age. They resort to cosmetic surgeries and botox treatments to hide their age. While such procedures have become exceedingly common, interfering with the natural process of aging can have serious repercussions and side-effects.

As we grow older, our body weakens and so does our mind. Although there are many ways to help keep our body in a reasonably healthy condition, it is a much more difficult task to reverse mental aging once it has begun. Nevertheless, it is not an impossible task to keep your mind youthful and agile in your old age. Keeping an agile mind in an ageing body is essential to prevent premature ageing too.

Today, we see that problems like memory loss occur at a younger age as compared to earlier generations. The combination of a highly stressful life and the lack of proper mental stimulation outside work are reasons for this. These have very serious repercussions with advancement in age and can lead to debilitating mental illnesses. A healthy work and life balance is becoming very important these days. Make sure you always have time for yourself in your busy schedule and engage in activities outside work.

Though it’s important to stay engaged with more than just work throughout your career, but if you are past your prime or have retired already, it’s not too late to explore world besides what you have experienced. Now that you have more time on your hands, indulge in music, watch cultural performances, start engaging with your hobbies and explore all that you have always wanted to, but never got the time to.

Age related mental illnesses can be avoided by making sure that your mind and body get the right kind of exercise. In fact, most people who understand the critical importance of physical exercise fail to give equal importance to exercising and stimulating their minds. Although physical exercise does help increase the blood flow to the brain, you also need to carry out specific mental agility exercises to keep your mental faculties in perfect condition, especially as you age.

Staying mentally active keeps your mind in good condition even when you age. Simple exercises to increase observation and memory help immensely. Every night, right before you sleep, recall the day’s activities in sequence. Remember to visualize each activity in detail. This simple act of recollection boosts your memory and enhances your powers of observation. There are some excellent memory games available on the internet – try these out and have fun as you exercise your mind.

Play brain games or games that involve strategizing. There are many mental challenge games online that can boost brain power while keeping your mind active and agile. Good old crosswords are also a great way to engage your brain in healthy mental activity. Learning new skills, like a new foreign language, are also excellent ways to give your brain a workout. Plus when you go out and meet people from different backgrounds in these classes, it can be refreshing change.

Social interaction is very important for maintaining adequate mental agility. The ability to recall names, faces and remember facts about a person exercises your brain cells. In addition, the very act of interacting with people, sharing thoughts and ideas provides both a mental and emotional release.

A fit body plays a very important role in ensuring that you keep old age problems at bay and enjoy life to the fullest even in your retirement years. Research has shown that elderly people who have maintained a consistent schedule of physical activity and proper diet have fewer age related illnesses. Arthritis, heart disease, blood pressure and a score of other ailments can be kept at bay by maintaining a fit body. There are three main elements that contribute to fitness – diet, rest and exercise.

A proper diet goes a long way in keeping your body’s immunity levels high and warding off common ailments. Excessive intake of carbohydrates and fats paves the way for ailments such as cardiovascular diseases, blood sugar, hypertension etc. As the body, functions slow down in old age and weakness creeps in, these diseases begin to take a toll. Ensuring that your food has adequate nutrition and the right combination of essential nutrients like minerals, proteins and vitamins keeps you healthy in old age. Remember to keep your diet fiber rich and high in immunity boosting food items such citrus fruits.

It is important not to overeat also, to ensure that you keep your weight in check. Being overweight itself can give rise to multiple health problems including joint pains, high cholesterol levels etc. Besides, when you are overweight, you also tend to loose self confidence and suffer from poor self image. This in turn may just be the gateway to poor mental health, which will affect physical well being – and you enter a vicious circle of deteriorating health and self esteem.

Rest is one of the essential things for a fit body that is widely overlooked in today’s fast paced life. Most people have no time for relaxation and rest only during weekends, if at all. It is necessary to let your body wind down after a tough day at work. A good night’s sleep for the right number of hours is a great way to refresh your mind and body for the next day’s work. Meditation, music, even reading are good ‘before sleep’ activities that help you get a restful night’s sleep. Make sure you get at least 7 hours of good sleep everyday to feel refreshed and energized for the day to come.

Exercise is essential for a physically fit body. No matter what your age, the right kind of exercise boosts blood circulation, keeps you energized and enhances mental agility too. Even a simple exercise like a regular walking regimen does wonders for the health of people across ages. It keeps your muscles in good condition and increases blood circulation. You can also try Yoga, pilates and light aerobics to stay fit. Choose a good instructor who can guide you well and stick to an exercise regimen that suits your body.

These three simple and effective elements are what it takes to make sure you lead a fit and healthy life through your golden years. Pay special attention to these for an active and healthy life post retirement.

Our health is becoming more important day by day and one of the best ways to keep healthy is to stay in trim.here we look at a way of doing that and earning a living at the same time

When my children flew the nest, I felt a little bored and wanted to do something different with my life. I had worked as a physical education teacher and really enjoyed it. It kept me slim, fit with masses of energy.

Going back to my previous job appealed, however, it would take up too much of my time, not leaving me with any time for myself. Working from home sounded good, so I had a look on the internet. This would allow me to keep the house spick and span, but what type of job? There were a number of jobs available, writing articles, addressing envelopes and tele-sales, but none were suitable to me.

On browsing the internet I clicked on an advert on how to become a personal trainer. I must admit I thought I was past that, especially having put on so much weight after having my family. Unsuccessful diets came and went; I realised I had become a couch potato with no energy. I knew things would have to change in the future.

I decided to become a personal trainer and began going to my local gym. Also played tennis again, a sport I had always loved. The pounds soon began to disappear and I felt really good once more. I did read that it didn’t really matter what size you are, anyone can become a personal trainer. You just have to be a good role model for your clients.

I made enquiries of how to become a personal trainer, reading a lot of information on the internet. The skills required were patience, persistency, being well-organised and a good motivator for others as well as being a good listener – thankfully I ticked all the boxes.

There was a workshop course available nearby to take an examination, leading to the necessary training certificate. I quickly enrolled and really enjoyed the lessons. I passed and achieved the qualification. Not a bad accomplishment for someone of my age. The next step was to find premises to put my new skills into practice.

Setting up my own business was what I wanted to do. I did a lot of research online about registering my company, choosing a business name, getting insurance and finding suitable premises. I was extremely lucky and soon found the perfect place. The next step was to market myself, so I set about getting flyers, newsletters and business cards printed.

My friends helped me out at first, by coming to my classes. They loved exercising under my instructions so much, most are still with me. Soon I had quite a few clients who preferred to have one-to-one personal training sessions. It is good to encourage others and see the results they achieve after exercising; I can only recommend others to do the same as I did. Don’t give up, just do it, you will feel the benefits!

Joyce Stewart is a freelance writer who has recently undertook Courses in Personal Training. She recommends courses in fitness as the perfect way to stay fit and healthy and lead an active lifestyle.

In my years of experience as a fitness personal trainer, one of the most common questions being posed to me by my clients is how to lose weight without having to go on a diet or an exercise program. There are many reasons why people ask this question and some of the reasons are that they have no discipline to diet, love to eat, lazy to exercise or have no time to exercise, just to name a few.

Although I always recommend that people who want to lose weight should exercise, so that they can be healthier, burn more calories to help the weight loss process and to look better because exercising can have many health and aesthetic benefits. However, there will be people who will not take this advice and so, here are some tips on how to lose weight without starvation diet and exercising.

First of all, we all know that in order to lose weight, you have to consume fewer calories than what your body burns for energy thereby creating a caloric deficit. Of course most people who are successful at losing weight will go on a caloric deficit diet and exercise to burn off more calories. Since you do not want to go on a diet and/or undergo an exercise program, you can try these methods to lose weight.

The first method is what I called “Put your utensils down”. You see, during a meal, your stomach takes about twenty minutes to communicate to your brain that you are full and to stop eating. So the idea is to eat slowly and one way to do that is to put your eating utensils down after every bite. Then munch the food in your mouth slowly as you watch the world goes by, take a sip of water or chat with a friend to while away the time before taking another bite and then put down your utensils again for every subsequent bites.

By doing this, you may find that you are already satiated before you’ve finished all the food on the plate. This will mean that you are consuming less food without starving like in a conventional diet.

The next tip is called “Eat half portion”. Separate a meal into half portions on two plates. Then slowly eat from the first plate. By the time you have finished the food on the plate, just ask yourself are you satiated? Do you need to eat from the second plate? Most of the time, you will find that you can be full enough not to eat from the second plate or just some portion of it will be enough.

The third tip is to drink lots of water and eat high fiber foods such as fruits and vegetables. The fiber will swell with the water you are drinking and make you feel full faster. Furthermore, your body does not absorb fibers easily and therefore your caloric intake is greatly reduced. It is also known that sugar from fruits especially fructose has little effect of raising your blood sugar level and thus is not easily converted to fat.

Furthermore, fibers are good for your digestive system and fruits and vegetables can also provide your body with many good vitamins and minerals. In this way, you can actually lose weight without starving or having to exercise although I still strongly advocate that exercise is good for you and you should do just that.

Chris Chew is a sought after fitness consultant and reckons that if you want to lose weight fast, then read Self Hypnosis To Lose Weight and How To Lose Weight For Girls

Most of us probably know that having a poor posture can make us look shorter than we actually are. Worse, poor posture can permanently affect your spine and muscles which causes them to contract making us physically shorter. So we should improve our posture to improve our height and the way people look at us.

If you are accustomed to holding up yourself with a poor posture, then the good news is that this can be readily remedied with certain exercises to help you to strengthen your muscles, improve your overall flexibility and to gain height. Here are three exercises for your shoulders, neck and spine to improve your posture.

Exercise #1 – Just sit down on a chair with your back straight and feet planted firmly flat on the ground. Relax your arms which are hanging by your sides with your palms down facing towards your body.

When you are in position, breathe in slowly and deeply while at the same time raising up your shoulders as high as they could go. When your shoulders are at their highest position, hold it there for a few seconds, then exhale slowly and release your shoulders back to their original positions.

This stretching exercise targets the shoulders and spine so much so that you can actually feel the effects of spine relaxation immediately while performing the exercise. Repeat the exercise a few more times to get its fullest effect.

Exercise #2 – Still in your sitting position as in the first exercise, this time focus your eyes just beyond the tip of the nose and put your right palm underneath your chin. When you are in position, inhale slowly and deeply and at the same time pressing your chin firmly with your palm so that you don’t lose the posture. You should feel your body rising upwards as you inhale. As with the first exercise, repeat it a few more times to feel its effect on your neck and back.

Exercise #3 – Again in a similar sitting position, tuck in your chin towards your throat. While in this position, breathe in deeply and slowly and then breathe out slowly. While breathing out, turn your head with your chin tucked to the left and at the same time keeping your shoulders as motionless as possible.

Now hold on to this position and again breathe in deeply and slowly. Then exhale slowly. Now as you are breathing out, turn your head back to the original position facing the front. Once in position, repeat the exercise with your head turning to the right and then back to the original position. Thereafter, repeat the exercise for a couple of times.

This exercise is designed to release the stress and tension stored in your neck and shoulder muscles. It is a great relaxation exercise for your spine as well.

Unknown to most people, many stretching exercises can help you to relief tension and stress, improve your posture and even increase your height. Yes, you have read the last bit correctly. Everyone can grow a little taller with the right exercise, good posture, diet and supplement, even if you are an adult. This is usually achieved by decompressing your spine. You can do your own research and see how this can be done.

Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates and is one of the most popular ways to be fit nowadays. Celebrities, dancers, health buffs, gymnasts and people who want to lose weight have become hooked to this exercise. The benefits from Pilates are quite numerous which is why a lot of people choose it over the other exercise forms. There are Pilates videos that you can look at for instructions or you can go to an instructor in your area.

What are the benefits from doing Pilates?

Pilates is not only for the body, but also the mind. It uses movements and breathing techniques that allow your body and your mind to relax. This is a good way of relieving stress, anxiety and depression. The main goal of Pilates is to let the mind have control over the muscles of the body. With Pilates, there is harmony between the mind and the body which makes Pilates a holistic exercise.

The muscle group that benefits much in this exercise is the one located in the abdomen. With regular use of this fitness program, the abdominal muscles are strengthened, providing the body with a sturdy center. The strengthening of this muscle group is the one which sets it part from other exercise regimens. The body benefits from a strong center, making it more physically ready and prepared to take on the day.

It promotes strength and endurance rather than just bulky muscles. This is why a lot of dancers and gymnasts utilize this form of exercise because it allows the body to have the strength, flexibility and endurance that it needs other than just a bunch of bulky muscles which are not necessary anyway. With Pilates, the movements are not repeated unlike other workout programs which make it more interesting, not boring and does not feel like a routine.

Since it strengthens your muscles and not just making them grow bigger, Pilates is effective in preventing injuries that are caused by uncoordinated movements. With Pilates, all the muscles of the body are strengthened and used which makes it able to adjust to unnecessary movements that may cause injuries to those who have not done exercises.

Pilates makes your mind and body work in a coordinated way. It can help you move smoothly and safely, with precision, balance and strength making your body work in its optimum potential. With regular practice of Pilates, the mind and body becomes more adaptable to change. Pilates requires he person to focus on the activity and breathing as well. The founder of Pilates believes that the body can reap benefits just by breathing properly. This activity allows oxygen to be available for all the cells making the body healthier.

Pilates is also beneficial in having a good posture since the movements rely on proper body mechanics. With good posture, the muscles become more stabilized and injuries are prevented effectively. This exercise has gained a lot of attention and most of them testify that indeed Pilates is an effective way to exercise. However, if you have medical conditions, consult your doctor first before trying Pilates.

High cholesterol is a common problem in adults mostly over the age of 40 but sometimes in young adults as well. It is extremely important to control cholesterol as it is a major contributor to clots, strokes, heart diseases and even heart attacks. If high cholesterol becomes a major health problem, it is typically controlled with the help of prescription drugs, which can cause undesirable side effects. You can also control cholesterol naturally by making a few changes to your diet and lifestyle. These simple changes also align your lifestyle for better and healthy living.

When you suffer from high cholesterol, it is important to watch what you eat. Fat content in the diet greatly affects cholesterol levels and consuming food high in fat is bound to increase cholesterol in the body. There are two types of fat found in foods – saturated and unsaturated. Unsaturated fats are in fact good for the body and helps in lowering cholesterol. They are normally found in fruits and vegetables and it is advisable to include these in your diet. Saturated fat is usually found in animal-based foods and it increases the risk of heart diseases. This is the fat type that accumulates in your arteries and chokes the flow of blood.

For a balanced diet, it is necessary to include a portion of lean meat or poultry. They provide your body with the right balance of proteins, fats and other nutrients. Take a lot of fruits and vegetables also – they are fiber, minerals and vitamins rich. Make sure you know the intake of fat and calories with every meal and stick to fat free or low fat dairy products. Consult a dietician who will help you plan exercises and meals that will work best for you. Some good diet and exercise routines are also available over the internet and in good diet books. However, it is always a good idea to check with your doctor about the safety and effectiveness of the diet you are planning to follow. Starving yourself is not the idea here, but having a well balanced and low saturated fat diet is certainly the aim.

Apart from a healthy diet, you should also adopt a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise goes a long way in controlling cholesterol levels in your body. Exercise also helps in regulating your weight, as being overweight increases risks of high blood pressure and heart diseases. Engage in physical activities like swimming, bicycling, jogging or join a gym for daily workouts. Alternatively, you can try aerobics and dance classes. Exercising helps burn the extra fat in your body and rids you of its harmful effects. The additional benefit of course is that you stay in great shape and look good.

Smoking also adds to the risk by lowering HDL or good cholesterol and is a major contributing factor to lung diseases, cancers and even heart diseases. So give up smoking for a better and healthier life. Though there is no direct link between alcohol and cholesterol, it is advisable to consume it in moderate amounts to prevent liver problems.

Many people are investing in home gyms Toronto rather than spending money on a gym membership. Many are investing in treadmills Toronto, and other types of fitness equipment. Exercise equipment is readily available for sale online or at fitness equipment centers in most major cities. The power plate is a popular choice for many home exercise enthusiasts.

Treadmills are a mainstay for those who like to keep in shape. The treadmill can be used by people who want to have a casual walk or a fast sprint in the comfort of their home any time of the day or night. The treadmill has many advantages for people who want to have a good aerobic exercise.

The treadmill can be adjusted to various speeds and inclines and different workout levels. The machine can be adjusted to a level incline or an uphill incline to make the workout more difficult. There are different workout programs such as the fat burn or the cardio setting.

The fat burning workout is a slower paced workout and is meant to help burn fat rather than build endurance. The person who has a lot of weight to lose should consider the fat burning treadmill workout because it allows the user to keep a steady pace without exerting an inordinate amount of energy while burning many calories. The cardio workout is for people who want to build endurance.

The cardio setting is for people who want to sprint their way to better health and more endurance. People who train for races like to use the cardio setting because it helps them prepare to run faster and for longer periods of time at a faster pace. The incline feature allows people to run uphill which builds both endurance and leg strength.

The power plate is a piece of exercise equipment that can add to a home gym atmosphere a new challenge. This machine uses the concept of acceleration and muscle action to build strength and endurance. Many people are using the power plate and the machine is becoming a popular choice for home gyms.

The advantage of having a home gym is convenience and cost savings. People who have a spa membership have to pay monthly or annual dues that can add up to thousands of dollars a year but a workout room in the home is usually a one time expense. Having a workout room in the home is convenient because there is no driving involved. People who have to drive to a spa to work out are more likely to skip their exercise schedule compared to someone with a gym at their home.

Home gyms Toronto offer convenience and cost savings compared to a spa membership. The gym in the home can be outfitted with the latest exercise equipment like the power plate. The treadmill is a good choice for a gym in the home because it can be used to build endurance and to lose weight. Many people are investing in a gym for their home because they can save money on gym memberships and not have to bother driving away from home to work out.

Fitness equipment retailer provides you with an informed decision on what Treadmills would work best for you. Choose from many brands in Home gyms Toronto and personal gyms.
