Get in Great Shape in 14 Days

I wanted to write and describe how I get my clients in great shape in a very short period of time – namely 14 days. Now, I generally warn people of the dangers of trying to change their bodies (and their lives) in such a short space of time. The perils include extreme muscle soreness, overtraining (and injury) and disappointment if expectations are unrealistic. However, needs must when the devil drives. If you want to resort to these extreme measures here is the programme to ensure you do it safely and effectively.

Your aim in the fourteen days is to do 9 workouts, leaving 5 rest or recovery days (these can include massage or gentle stretching sessions like Yoga or Pilates). For the first week I recommend two days on and one day off with the sessions getting more frequent in the second week. There are three programmes, each of three workouts and they are all intense.

In the first programme my clients would do 30 minutes of intense cardio on a mixture of machines.

They also do a number of body weight exercises such as squats, step ups and press ups. I like them to hit 500 reps in the workout. They progress to free weight exercises and interval training in the second phase before finishing with three sessions of multi joint weight training circuits and a mock triathlon in the final phase.

Throughout this period I encourage them to stretch, get massage and sleep well as the muscle soreness can be extreme. Now you may think that this huge workout volume alone would deliver amazing results, and often times it does. However, the real trick comes in the nutritional manipulation and fat burning supplements.

While an in a depth discussion of the nutritional protocol is beyond the scope of this article and in truth every individuals recommendation is different. The basics involve cutting out the obvious bad stuff – alcohol, sweets, bread, etc. Most of my clients need to eat more fat and protein to help improve their metabolism and I encourage a low glycemic load carbohydrate intake to moderate insulin levels, which automatically brings body fat down.

While each person has a unique supplement plan I generally recommend fish oil and carnitine to help reduce body fat and HCL and digestive supplements to improve digestion.

Many of my clients are stressed out city workers so I work on improving their sleep patterns and boosting their adrenal health. I often tell my clients the nutrition and supplementation part is more than 60% of the solution.

This is a very hardcore extreme protocol which delivers amazing results if stuck to properly.

The best results I’ve seen is a 11/2 stone reduction, however, 0.5 – 1 stone is more common. Often times people gain muscle mass, which disguises fat loss on the scales.

That’s why I always take body circumference measures and skinfold measures and this is where the results are usually more remarkable and people report that their clothes are falling off them. No Equipment Necessary!

I wanted to share with you my varied experience of training clients with absolutely no equipment. I have done this with individual clients, small groups and it even worked with 60 semi- professional rugby players (albeit with some balls and cones). While I’ll never profess no equipment exercise are my workouts of choice, particularly for the clients I work with, having an equipment free work out up your sleeve is always handy.

First of all I’m going to talk to you about body weight exercises and whilst there are dozens of them to choose from I’m going to focus on 3-4 of the most commonly recognised ones. The ones I use regularly are squats, lunges, push ups and pull ups (you’ll need something like a bike rack or fence to hang off for this one). Along with varying the type of each exercise e.g. single leg squat, walking lunges, spiderman push ups and inverted pull ups, I change one other important variable- the tempo or time under tension (TUT).

This takes a standard body weight exercise and makes it a powerhouse exercise. Basically I get the client to slow the lowering phase, of say a squat, over 4 seconds, pausing in the bottom position and holding for 2 seconds before returning to the start position. This increases the TUT about fourfold compared to a one second up one second down version of the exercise. Believe me 12 reps of these has even conditioned exercisers wobbly at the knees by the end of the set. This principle can be applied to pretty much most body weight exercises including ab exercises like the plank.

It’s a short five minute video where all you need is a bench to perform the workout.

This brings me to my next tip – park benches and steps. These add real variety (and gravity) to a workout. Exercises like step ups require you to lift your body against gravity (increasing energy expenditure) and also allows you to raise your feet to make push ups more challenging. Other great reasons to use a bench in your outdoor workouts is for traditional dips exercises and lying crunches (keeps you off the cold grass or pavement).

The final type of bodyweight exercises I like to use are the military / plyometric exercises (depending on the condition of the client).

Exercises like tuck jumps, burpees and squat thrusts which are explosive type exercises get my clients cooking really quickly.

A small circuit of 3-4 of these exercises with short rest periods really jacks your metabolism up and burns a lot of calories. Be careful with your technique on these exercises as when you’re fatigued they can lead to injury. How Coconut Oil Can Kickstart Your Metabolism

More importantly, none of the locales seems to be sneezing, coughing or suffering from a runny nose.

It’s an observation that’s bound to get you wondering. What is the secret behind their good health?. Could it be the sun? Or the stress-free life that they practice? The prevalence of salt in the air? Those things may play a role, but the real secret lies within the world’s largest seed.

The Coconut: A Nutrient Powerhouse…

Coconut has been used by the Polynesian and Malaysian cultures for many years. The body requires a number of essential nutrients in order to function naturally during the day. Coconuts provide more than 95% of these. As well as being an important provider of essential amino acids, coconuts are also a rich source of minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, manganese, vitamin B, vitamin C and calcium. There are even more options to be found with coconut oil. However, with its high percentage of saturated fat (over 85%), coconut oil is sometimes the subject of a lot of debate.

The Saturated Fat Controversy…

Coconut oil is derived from the dried flesh of the coconut fruit. The coconut fruit also contains plant-based saturated fat which is widely viewed by professionals in the medical health to be unhealthy. Coconut might be made up of 90% of saturated fat but nearly 50% of this is in turn made up of a fatty acid called lauric acid that is metabolized into monolaurin by the body. Unlike normal fat however, medium-chain triglycerides are sent to the liver where they are then converted into energy. What this simply means is that, instead of being stored in your fat cells (which is what happens when you eat your typical bacon and omelet breakfast), the fat content found in coconut oil is sent to your liver where it is almost immediately burned off.

Let’s now consider some of the proposed benefits of coconut oil. Coconut appears to be anti-just-about-everything:

* Anti-bacterial

A pharmacological study of virgin coconut oil found that it reduced inflammation in rats. Also discovered during the study was the fact that coconut oil could be used in reducing the symptoms of fever (anti-pyretic) and pain in rats suffering from induced hyperthermia. Based on these findings, researchers concluded that there was credible evidence supporting the view that coconut oil possessed “…”anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties.” In non-technical terms, it proved that coconut oil could be used in relieving the effects of fever, inflammation and pain. Great news – for the rats. The findings of the study would bear even more weight if they were done with humans.

To test the antifungal properties of coconut, samples of coconut oil were used in treating an infection caused by the fungi Candida. The response time was then compared with that of a similar treatment where fluconazole was used (fluconzaole is a known antifungal drug). Fifty-two different isolates of Candida were obtained from clinical specimens. Out of this sample, the isolate Candida Alibicans was the most commonly used. Candida Albicans is the most common cause of diaper rash, thrush and vaginitis. It is also the primary cause of yeast infections. All isolates were tested to see how susceptible they were to both virgin coconut oil and the antifungal drug. The results of the test showed that while strains of Candida Albicans could be treated with as low as a 1:4 dilution rate with coconut oil, researchers required twice as much (1:2) to achieve the same results with Fluconazole.

In summary: Samples of coconut oil were twice as effective in fighting the fungus. In simpler terms, the coconut oil worked better (in a smaller quantity) than the drug. A testament once again of the triumph of nature.

When it comes to antibacterial properties, one study in particular found that virgin coconut oil helped to treat skin infections. Performing a double blind, placebo-controlled study, researchers recorded the response time of 26 patients who suffered from atopic dermatitis – a skin condition, highly susceptible to the bacterium Staphylococcus Aureus with symptoms such as dry and painful skin .

Half of the participants of the study were required to apply coconut oil twice a day to two uninfected areas of their body for 28 days. The other half were requested to use virgin olive oil while following a similar routine. At the start of the study, 76% of the participants were found to be positive when tested for Staphylococcus Aureus. In the days following, the number of people using coconut oil who suffered from this bacteria dropped to less than 5 percent while as much as half of the people using olive oil still tested positive for the bacteria. The use of coconut was also found to be effective in relieving the dry skin of users.

With these results, most researchers came to the conclusion that there was credible evidence that the use of coconut oil could be used in treating conditions of fungal, viral or bacterial origins. Although we agree, we’d be even more delighted if this study was extended to an even larger participant pool as well as a larger variety of bacterial strain in order to further establish these results.

Heart and Fat Burning Benefits As Well…

Advocates of coconut oil point to its cardio-protective and fat-burning properties in addition to its antibacterial benefits. According to a population study of about 2,500 people from the Polynesian islands of Tokelau and Pukapuka, high coconut oil intake has no effect on cholesterol levels.

During the study, researchers focused on people whose diet was made up of high fat content that had primarily been derived from coconuts. The results of the study showed that the neither the overall health of the participants nor their vascular stamina was in any way compromised by their high coconut oil diet. Based on these results Dr. Ian Prior – the lead researcher on the study – rightly concluded that there was no evidence that the high saturated fat content of coconut oil had any negative health effect.

This conclusion was really not surprising because it was something that many people had already known. As well as being safe for use, coconut oil also offers a number of important benefits such as enhanced gastrointestinal health. There is, however, no formal study backing up this view. Interestingly, when it comes to weight loss, it appears that coconut oil’s medium-chain triglycerides are the very reason it is effective. It turns out that when you eat coconut oil, your body uses it more quickly rather than storing it as body fat. Because of the thermogenic properties of medium-chain triglycerides, your body is able to burn calories at a much faster rate.

For example, according to several online sources, farmers from the 1940s wanted to fatten up their livestock, so they gave them coconut oil. However, the animals became leaner and more active. Although this example cannot be confirmed by any credible source, we did discover a human study that appeared to back it up. During a series of tests performed on the residents of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico (a town where coconut is eaten almost daily), it was discovered that they had a metabolic rate that was 25% higher than those of the average American. And then we stumbled across an insightful study involving a randomized, placebo controlled, double-blind research in Brazil. In a study designed to test the effects of coconut on weight loss, 40 women with ages ranging from 20-40 were treated for clinical abdominal obesity with coconut oil. Half of the group received a daily dose of either soybean oil or coconut oil for 12 weeks. Each of these women were asked to walk for 50 minutes every day and to carefully follow a balanced low calorie diet.

At the end of the study period, those taking the coconut oil had a statistically greater loss of waist circumference that those taking the soybean oil. Participants of the coconut oil group also had a statistically higher level of HDL cholesterol and a lower LDL/HDL ratio when compared to the soybean group. Members of both groups recorded a decrease in their body mass index. At the end of the study, the women who used coconut oil were able to increase their “good” cholesterol level to healthy margins. They were also able to trim down their waist size by shedding a few extra pounds . Not bad for a big seed!

Cinnamon and Weight Loss: Slimming With Apple Pie

There is a connection between cinnamon and weight loss, which is good news for those that love the taste of cinnamon and also have to lose weight. Thus, your blood sugar (glucose) is used for energy and not to generate fat.

Without these insulin receptors being activated, your cells cannot enable glucose to enter the cellular mitochondria where it is used in the Krebs Cycle to generate ATP energy. The only other option for it is then to be metabolized into fat, used as an emergency energy source that is stored in your fat cells. Hence, you tend to put on weight. The function of insulin is to enable the cells of your body to absorb glucose so that it can used, together with oxygen, in cellular respiration to generate energy.

Cinnamon promotes this, and its use in promoting good health was known by the Romans who would burn the tree bark (which cinnamon is) in their homes because it was believed to clean the air and keep them healthy. The Romans did not know why, but they knew that it did. This is one more example of ancient remedies and usage of herbs and spices for which modern science is able to provide a reason.

Give them credit; these old civilizations sure knew what was good for them – and bad. They were masters of both health-promoting natural substances and poisons which they used a lot. In fact, was it not for their prolific use of poisons the world would likely now be overpopulated!

Cinnamon and weight loss go hand in hand in that cinnamon helps your fat cells to react to insulin levels, and burns fat when needed to generate energy. By enabling your body to metabolize carbohydrates more readily into glucose and then energy, cinnamon and weight loss are very tightly connected in terms of your metabolism.

There is much more to it than just that, but for now it is enough to understand that cinnamon and weight loss both have a connection with the metabolism of carbohydrates to glucose, the glycolysis of glucose to pyruvate and the cellular oxidation of pyruvate to energy. The more efficient that process, the more fat you will burn and convert to energy.

Cinnamon is more than just a flavoring for cookies and apple pie (Mmmm…) – Cinnamon and weight loss are interconnected in a way that you may not fully understand, but that will make you lose weight quicker by reducing the fat stored within your fat cells. Weight Loss Tips: The HCG Diet

The HCG Diet is next in my weight loss tips articles. I am amazed at how gullible people are and how they will talk about ‘diets’ without really understanding what they are. The Atkins Diet is one: although it works in the short term, if you continue with a high carbohydrate diet over the longer term you will suffer bad breath (halitosis) due to ketosis, constipation due to a lack of fiber and potentially serious damage to your cardiovascular system due to a lack of phytochemicals and antioxidants.

In order to avoid these you must take the supplements recommended by Dr. Atkins: up to 63 of them if my mind is correct, and many that he marketed himself. That kind of throws the ‘impartiality’ aspect of his recommendations out the window.

However, the point I am making is that diets such as Atkins and HCG are rarely properly researched by their adherents before they use them. That would be one of my major weight loss tips: check out the diet before you blindly take it. Take HCG: it isn’t even a diet!!

The HCG Diet: What is it?

The so-called ‘HCG diet’ is a series of injections introduced hypodermically directly into your muscles. HCG is correctly known as Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, a substance produced by the placenta of pregnant women. Its function is to convert fat stored in the mother’s fat cells into energy for the growing fetus.

Fat is a carbohydrate, and can be used by your metabolism to generate energy once the carbohydrate in your diet has been used up. By injecting it directly into your muscle tissue, HCG can break down your fatty tissue into energy. Or so it was believed until recently.

It is now believed that HCG tells your brain that you are full, and need eat no more. In doing that, your metabolism will rapidly use up your carbohydrate stores, and when no more are available because you are not eating as much as normal, your metabolism turns to your fat stores for energy. In other words, the HCG diet is not a diet at all but a series of injections that work as an appetite suppressant.

Now you might think it doesn’t matter how it works so long as you lose weight, and frequently this assertion is correct. In fact, as far as I know there have been no reported side effects of the HCG diet, as we refer to it for the meantime, and so there appear to be no reason why you should not use it. So should I include it among my weight loss tips? If not, what would be the reasons?

One I can think of is that by having your appetite suppressed, you may also be eating too few nutrients, not only reducing your carbohydrate content but you may also suffer problems associated with your cardiovascular system – a common result with poor nutrition and a low antioxidant content in your diet. Nevertheless, nothing appears to have been reported although it is early days yet.

Quite frankly, I would not take these injections myself because using a hypodermic needle to lose weight seems extreme to me. I could not realistically include hypodermic treatment as one of my weight loss tips.

It is said to enable you to lose up to 5 lb a day – this is an unhealthy rate of weight loss, and your weight is one example of fastest isn’t best. 3 -4 pounds a week is OK, or even up to one pound a day, but 5 lb – that is equivalent to 20 sticks of margarine. Is it really healthy to lose that much every day – 140 a week?

Absolutely not, as far as I am concerned. However, while it appears to work it cannot be denied that the HCG diet should possibly be included in my range of slimming tips. It may be, but I do not recommend using HCG injections (or the so-called HCG diet) as a regular weight loss treatment. Decide for yourself.

The Second form of cardio exercise is high intensity interval training. This is defined as short bursts of activity followed by a brief rest period and then replicate the cycle for a certain number of times. The optimal cardio workout system would be to alternate High Intensity Interval training with Slow and steady Cardio exercise every other workout. With these three primary elements done effectively, then 9 lbs of excessive fat should be quite simple to conquer in a short time period. Just remember, Nutrition, Strength training, and Cardio exercise is paramount. The best split might possibly be Weight lifting 4 days every week, and Cardiovascular training 3 to 5 days each week for optimum results.

The tapeworm diet does not work, and I intend to tell you why: it’s sheer logic! This article will explain that the diet could work if you could give it a “whatever is the opposite of a laxative” supplement, but while tapeworms poop and pee, you have no chance!

Selling Tapeworm for Dietary Purposes is Illegal

The US government has banned trading in tapeworm – but why? If the tapeworm does not work why ban it? Is the country awash with tapeworms so that their import must be restricted? Perhaps they are just too difficult to tax, because the Great American Public might not be as agreeable to being scanned for tapeworm as they are to being checked for bombs.

It’s one thing checking for drugs but quite another to have a tapeworm detector stuffed down your throat or up your rectum!

Nope – there are other reasons. One is that the tapeworm diet does not work and is actually a bit dodgy and the other is that it might kill you ( that would make you lose weight) – so the FDA have banned doctors from slipping tapeworm down your throat (or anything else) for health reasons. It is illegal to sell tapeworm or tapeworm diet pills on the open market in the USA but you can get them in Mexico or on the internet where anything goes.

Does the Tapeworm Diet Work?

So you can’t take a prescription for tapeworm to your local pharmacist and be handed over a few 50 foot monsters wriggling in a bag for you to eat, and nor can you buy their eggs. It has nothing to do with food – they are not classed as foodstuffs, and you can’t boil or scramble these eggs – it would stop them working.

But assuming you could get your hands on some, would they work? Being serious, is it worth your while driving down to Mexico, or going online with a Google search for tapeworm eggs? I am a scientist – a genuine chemist with an Honors Degree in Chemistry from Edinburgh University and I write with all the authority of a qualified chemist who knows more about tapeworm than anybody that knows nothing about them. So here’s my take on why the tapeworm diet does not work.

What are Tapeworms?

If you eat feces, swallow feces-contaminated food or eat raw fish, beef or pork from contaminated animals, you can ingest tapeworm or their eggs. You can also take them in pills or eat live segments (have them on toast, but don’t cook them – that will kill them).

The Tapeworm Diet: How it Works

The theory behind the tapeworm diet is very simple:

a) You make yourself have tapeworm.

b) You eat food.

c) The tapeworm eats your food.

d) You lose weight.

Why the Tapeworm Diet Does Not Work

1. The tapeworm might not like onions or fat, or it might be a veggie worm – or even a vegan – so it won’t eat your food. It might even be on a diet if it is too fat.

2. The tapeworm has its digestive system and metabolism just as you have, so

3. After taking its nutrition it grows. It gets bigger and puts on weight – therefore, so do you! How much does a 60 foot tapeworm weigh? Not far off half a ton I would imagine. I even read of a 168 foot one.

4. It also passes its feces through its anus just as you do, so it pees and poops in your intestine!

5. The tapeworm diet therefore CONTRIBUTES to your weight by:

a) Fattening up a tapeworm that started as just an egg or a single segment. As it gets heavy then so do you.

b) The tapeworm pees and poops into your intestine, so you then have to pass that along with yours and how much does your own poo weigh, without adding a 160 foot tapeworm poop. That must be at least as big as a dozen burgers! Until you pass the tapeworms you will heavier.

Perhaps you can now see why it is illegal in the USA. American politicians are allegedly well in with the food growers in the USA and could therefore likely oppose any motion designed to reduce your purchase of food. Because the tapeworm and its feces is effectively acting as a food supply for you, the tapeworm have been banned until such time as they develop a strain that does not provide you with a free meal (tapeworm poop).

Conclusion

The tapeworm diet is effective but not as effective as it could be. It is an inefficient way of losing weight, and the United States government has recognized this fact.

So to recap: the food the tapeworm eats is processed just as yours is, and ultimately ends up as a combination of energy (wriggling worm), fat, muscle (heavier worm = heavier you) and poop. Where does the poop go – into your intestine where it then loses its sugars into your bloodstream – that adds even more weight to your body cells.

It’s the ultimate in recycling! It means the tapeworm diet does not work.

Surviving The Atkins Diet

There are a ton of factors which contribute to the success of your diet. The most important factor is finding the right diet. For me, the Atkins Diet worked best. Minus 45 pounds later I wanted to share some great tips to surviving the Atkins Diet.

I was fascinated the first time I turned on my television and saw a man eating bacon and eggs who said he was on a diet. What kind of diet was this? This was the Atkins Diet. The science behind the Atkins Diet is simple. Without carbohydrates, your body will learn to burn your fat as fuel. This appealed greatly to me who loved to eat steak, eggs, bacon, and ribs and needed to lose weight. I was sold!

It was not easy and after a rocky start I got into a groove. I learned to make the diet work for me. I turned an uncomfortable situation into a way of life. How did I do that? Here are a few shortcuts to get you through the first several weeks of the Atkins Diet.

The hardest part about the diet is getting used to life without bread. It is not a big deal to pick up a hot dog or a hamburger for the first time without bread, enjoy it, and revel in your diet. A week or two later is a different story. Substitute lettuce for bread and you will be surprised at how little you miss the bread. Wrap your hot dogs and hamburgers in lettuce. Enjoy low-fat deli meats wrapped in lettuce. Lettuce is your friend and you can eat as much of it as you want. In addition to having something to wrap your meat around, it will also fill you up fast.

Cook your meals for the week ahead of time. If you are like me and you have a crazy work schedule, you don’t have time to come home and make a great tasting low carb meal. On Sundays I always make my dinners for the week through Thursday or Friday. This allowed me to go wild and create some great tasting dishes that I normally would not have had the time to make during the week. It is very easy to slip up when you come home hungry. In three minutes you could have a lean cuisine or hot pocket full of carbs. In three minutes you can also have a wonderful chicken or meat dish prepared earlier in the week that tastes better and won’t break your diet.

In addition to cooking ahead of time, plan your meals ahead of time. Sit down once or twice a week and write out everything you are going to eat and when. If you get into the habit of following your own menu, you have less of a chance to cheat. I also found it rewarding to see my accomplishments in black and white. No bread, no carbs, no more weight!

Cheat! Yes you heard me, cheat. I wouldn’t recommend this until you have successfully completed the first two weeks of the Atkins Diet. Once you have completed the diet for two weeks, pick a day and cheat. When I say cheat, I don’t mean go nuts. I mean have carbs in your meals. Eat pizza, grab a doughnut, or make some pasta for dinner. You are only hurting yourself if you go overboard, so keep it all in moderation. It is great motivation for a tough week. In addition to rewarding yourself for your hard work, you are also shocking your body. If your body gets used to the Atkins Diet, you will plateau fast. Shake things up, shock your body, and grab a slice of pie. One slice!

Endulge! No that isn’t a misspelling, I meant to say “endulge.” Atkins products produces a great selection of Endulge candy. My favorite is the peanut butter cups. They taste exactly like peanut butter cups. Since regular Cool Whip or whipped cream is allowed, you can even dip them in whipped cream if you like. I wouldn’t recommend eating them more than once a day, but they really help get you past some boring meals. I love them and they never hampered my weight loss at all.

Finally, get creative with your recipes. There are thousands of great tasting Atkins Diet recipes online and in books. There is no reason you can’t create a dry rub for those ribs on the grill that will taste better than ribs drowning in sauce. I am not a good cook, but I learned how to create some great rubs with Atkins friendly spices. I found some recipes that made me feel as if I was eating in a five-star restaurant. There is no reason you have to eat plain fish or plain chicken on the Atkins Diet. Do research online, take some books out from your local library, test some recipes out, create your own, and eat like a king or queen without the guilt of hundreds of carbs.

So there you go! It is not as bad as you think it will be. Remember, this isn’t a quick fix. To be successful on the Atkins Diet, the diet needs to be a way of life. Learn to eat low carb and high protein everyday and you will keep the weight off and be healthier than ever. Remember last but certainly not least to consult your physician before you begin any kind of diet program.
